Animation: Newcomen’s steam engine

The following animation illustrates how a Newcomen steam engine works.

Functionality

The Newcomen steam engine consists of a vertical cylinder and a piston. The cylinder is filled with steam from a boiler, which pushes the piston upwards. After the piston reaches the top dead center, an operator opens a valve to inject cold water into the cylinder. This causes the steam to condense, creating a vacuum. The atmospheric pressure then pushes the piston downwards. This up-and-down movement is used to operate a pump in a mine.

Note

Although the drawing looks amateurish compared to modern technical drawings, it is geometrically coherent. The spatial arrangement and all the distances were obviously important.
